Climate Change: a Threat to International Peace and Security
The 2023 Global Risks Report of the World Economic Forum described that climate and environmental risks are the core focus of global risks perceptions over the next decade. Thus, it remains counterintuitive that as the primary United Nations organ concerned with the maintenance of international peace and security, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has failed to characterize climate change as a “threat to international peace and security”.
Peace at the Margins
This article features a conversation with Dr. Uyanwune, highlighting the intersection of peace, health, and human rights in the context of technological innovation. The UPEACE Global Center for Peace Innovation continues its efforts to envision peace through technology and systemic approaches that empower marginalized communities. Dr. Uyanwune focuses on albinism, a rare genetic condition that poses significant health risks and social challenges, particularly in Africa, where stigma and discrimination exacerbate vulnerabilities. He emphasizes that peace and health innovations do not necessarily require cutting-edge technology but rather inclusive, systemic coordination among health, education, and community sectors. Such multidisciplinary approaches can improve healthcare access, reduce stigma, and foster social inclusion, aligning with several Sustainable Development Goals including good health, quality education, gender equality, and reduced inequalities. This perspective links the fulfillment of the right to health with building positive peace through sustainable, preventative innovation.
